A news study has suggested that people who play computer games before sleep may have a greater awareness and control over their dreams.

The research shows people who play more games more often have lucid dreams, where they look upon themselves from a third-person perspective. And also that they have a greater level of control over actions taken in the dream.

More recent studies by Jayne Gackenbach, a psychologist at Grant MacEwan University in Canada, look into the idea that comparatively, gamers when faced with a nightmare, will take the initiative and aggressively fight their way out of the dream scenario with relatively little fear. This early hypothesis could mean that people who suffer frequent sleep depriving nightmares may find a solution in virtual reality gaming.

Josef Stalin blocked two attempts to kill Adolf Hitler during the Second World War, fearing that his replacement as Nazi leader would make peace with the Western Allies, a top Russian general said.

A plan to attack Hitler’s bunker in 1943 and a 1944 plot involving an assassin who had gained the trust of the Nazi leadership were both cancelled on Stalin’s orders, General Anatoly Kulikov told a historical conference in Moscow on Tuesday.

“A plan to assassinate Hitler in his bunker was developed, but Stalin suddenly cancelled it in 1943 over fears that after Hitler’s death his associates would conclude a separate peace treaty with Britain and the United States,” Russia’s RIA news agency quoted Gen Kulikov as saying.

In 1944, the Soviets again plotted to kill Hitler after a potential assassin managed to gain the trust of the Nazi leadership. “A detailed assassination plan was prepared, but Stalin cancelled it again,” Gen Kulikov was quoted as saying.

Hitler killed himself on April 30, 1945, as Soviet forces closed on Berlin, effectively ending the war in Europe and setting the stage for the Cold War stand-off between Russia and the West.

An estimated 27 million Soviet citizens died in the 1941-1945 war with Nazi Germany.

Gen Kulikov was Russia’s interior minister from 1995 to 1998 under President Boris Yeltsin. He said that the Club of Military Leaders, which he heads, would include details of the assassination attempts in a forthcoming book on the Second World War.

An extraordinary crop circle based on the ‘world’s most beautiful maths theorem’ has appeared in a field next to a windmill in Wiltshire.

The complex disc, which measures 300ft across, appeared to the east of Wilton Windmill near Marlborough in a blazing yellow rape seed field.

It appeared on Saturday just 25miles from another circle that popped up a fortnight ago by the Iron Age hill fort of Old Sarum

Lucy Pringle, a renowned crop circle researcher was puzzled by what appears to be a hidden code based on complex numbers within the shape.

She said: ‘I believe it contains binary, a numeral system, or base-2 number system that represents numeric values using two symbols, 0 and 1.

‘Working from the centre outwards, people are suggesting it has a connection to Leonhard Euler’s theorem e^(i)pi+1=0 which is thought to be one of the most beautiful theorems in mathematics.’

The notorious Amityville Horror house has gone up for sale for £800,000, but would you feel safe there?

Probably one of the most famous horror houses, having featured in the 1979 film The Amityville Horror, this five-bedroom Dutch Colonial property situated in New York has yet again gone on sale.

The incredibly troubled past started in 1974 when six members of the DeFeo family were shot dead as they slept by the eldest son Ronald DeFeo. 23 at the time, he remains in prison serving a life sentence.

After the horrific incident, the house was first put up for sale and was purchased by George And Kathleen Lutz. They along with their three children remained in the house for only 28 days. Moving in on December 23, 1975 a family friend asked that they get the house blessed to overcome it’s history. However when the priest entered a room of the house, a male voice demanded he ‘Get Out!’

The next day the priest telephoned to ask that the family stay out of the room where he heard the voice, but the call cut short by static, he returned only to develop a fever and stigmata-like blisters on his hands.

Over the course of the next 27 days, the family experienced many supernatural terrors, including; swarms of flies; a secret ‘red room’; ghostly embraces; ooze from walls and doors; cloven hoof prints outside; visions of red eyes and a pig-like demon; detailed nightmares of the murders; and bite-marks from a china lion!

Since then the house has been lived in by families who had no such experiences, but given the fraught history and paranormal nature of the house, this is sure to receive many interested bidders… or for the reasons above, none at all.

A family has defied the odds to have a son, father and grandfather all born on the same day.

When Benjamin Fox arrived in the world on May 8 he shared the same birthday as not only his father Lee but also his grandfather Harry.

Bookmakers have worked out the odds of three generations of the same family all having boys born on the same day as 272,910 to one.

David Williams a spokesman for Ladbrokes said: “It’s an incredibly rare thing to happen. If the family had put a bet on it before Benjamin was born they would be very rich now.”

Benjamin’s proud dad Lee, 35, a insulation engineer from Romford, Essex, said he was stunned when a midwife revealed at three months that his baby was expected to be born on his birthday of May 8.

He said: “When they did the scan and the measurements and worked out the baby would be born on May 8 I just said ‘No way, that’s my birthday and my dad’s too’.

“We were told first babies rarely arrive on their due day, they can be early and late so we never thought for a moment that the baby would be born on mine and my dad’s birthday.”

The MoD has admitted that it blew up 119 live pigs at its Porton Down research centre in Salisbury to test the effects of the Taliban’s bombs on British soldiers.

Animal rights campaigners were furious at the news, but the Ministry of Defence insisted that their experiments had ’saved many lives’ in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The controversial tests were carried out between 2006 and 2009, and the MoD say that as a result they’ve made big improvements in body armour and in the treatment of soldiers who’ve been injured by roadside bombs.

The pigs are anaesthetised before each experiment and some are given body armour to test its effectiveness in reducing damage from IEDs.

Scientists say that the injuries sustained by the animals are consistent with those received by soldiers, so potentially life-saving improvements in trauma care result from the tests.

However, the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection said: ‘Not only are such experiments scientifically questionable… subjecting pigs to such massive mutilation and injury also raises profound ethical questions.’

An MoD spokesman said: ‘The advances made due to this research can be utilised both in theatre and civilian scenarios, particularly if there are mass casualties and evacuation to hospital is delayed.’

A 15-year-old schoolgirl has told of her terror after being chased by a big cat she claims was a ‘black panther’ in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.

Kim Howells was enjoying a walk through the woodland on her 15th birthday with her cousin Sophie Gwynne, eight, when they came across the animal lying beneath a tree.

Ms Howells, who described the ‘panther’ as about the size of a Great Dane dog, with big eyes, paws and a long tail, said the creature began following them after they spotted it at around 8.30pm on Monday night.

She said: ‘I saw something out of the corner of my eye and at first I thought it was a log or something.

‘We carried on walking but then I looked back and it was sitting up looking at me.

‘It was definitely a big cat. I’ve seen wild boar and deer in the Forest before and it definitely wasn’t one of them.

‘What makes me sure is that it was still light so I could see it really clearly.’

Locals in a small Canadian town have been stumped by the appearance of a bizarre creature, which was dragged from a lake.

The animal, which has a long hairy body with bald skin on its head, feet and face, has prompted wild internet speculation that it is a more evolved version of the famous ‘Montauk monster’.

The creature was discovered by two nurses in the town of Kitchenuhmaykoosib in Ontario, Canada, while out on a walk with their dog.

When the dog began sniffing in the lake, the two women started investigating, before the dog pulled the dead animal out.

After taking some photographs of the odd animal, the nurses left it alone. When locals decided to go back and retrieve the body, it has disappeared.

The photographs have now been posted on a local website, with an explanation which reads: ‘This creature was first discovered by Sam the Dog, a local dog.

‘It was discovered first week of May in the creek section of town, hikers noticed Sam sniffing something in the water and they approached to see in what the Sam had detected and they noticed the creature in the water face down.

The dog jumped in the lake and pulled the creature to the rocks and dragged it out for the hikers to see and these are the photos they took.

‘The creature’s tail is like a rat’s tail and it is a foot long.’

The infamous UFO-shaped balloon that caused a viral storm has now been returned to the “Balloon Boy” and his family

Richard Henne and family of Colorado will always go down in history as the folks who made the world believe that their son had floated away in a homemade balloon. The little boy was dubbed ‘Balloon Boy’. Henne and his wife were both charged and sentenced to short jail terms. Word is now, that the balloon has been returned to the family.

The UFO shaped balloon was an experimental balloon that the Henne Family had made as part of their family amateur weather experiments. It was in October of 2009, when a mysterious balloon looking craft was floating vicariously over the outskirts of Denver, Colorado and first word was that there was a child inside. Come to find out, the child had been hiding in the garage the whole time and the parents were charged with public endangerment.

Now the Henne Family have gotten their infamous balloon back. There were stipulations though. Richard Henne was forced to pay $36,000 in restitution for public services rendered in the chase of the balloon, committing to working 10 weekends with various non profits, and completing their 90 day jail sentences. Richard Henne has apparently done that and now the balloon that put them on the map is back home safe and sound.

A girl, 5, left seriously ill when both her kidneys failed astounded medical experts by growing two new ones.

Angel Burton suffered from painful kidney infections from birth to the point where she required surgery at the age of five.

But surgeons were amazed to discover the little girl had four kidneys, with two new fully-formed organs sitting on top of her old ones.

And the new ones had taken over the role of the others, meaning she was effectively ‘cured’ of kidney failure.

Now, three years on, Angel, now eight, is fighting fit and her family are still thankful for the miracle that changed her life.
