Reader Chris Holly has sent us these intriguing photographs taken by his father at Ottery-St-Mary in Devon.
They show a single footprint – or rather paw print – that appeared overnight in wet sand that was laid down for his father’s patio. The print is partly weathered by the rain that made the sand wet but its large size can be clearly seen by comparison with a brick placed beside it.
‘My father is not the sort of person to indulge in practical jokes like this,’ says Chris. ‘It freaked him out because the photos don’t do justice to what he originally found. The reason he took a picture and made a comment of his find was the fact that there was only one print. The area was large enough for a set of prints or at least a pair of prints.
‘Like my father I am a sceptic of weirdness but this made us wonder! I have personally done some research and have been unable to match the prints with any known British animal.’
If anyone can identify the print or suggest how just one appeared in an area of wet sand, we’d be most interested!
Images of what are believed to be a mystery cat have been taken on a trail camera in an undisclosed Buckinghamshire location.
Our Sightings compiler, Mark Fraser, of Big Cats in Britain, kindly sent them to us for our perusal.
Mark explains: ‘The animal is first seen on the edge of the camera flash, then in the next two shots slinking away out of sight. The cameras have been in the secret location for two months before the images were taken.
‘Unfortunately the animal is in the shadows in the periphery of the camera flash, making a positive identification impossible. But what we can see is a large spotted feline animal. On the first image the face is visible, on the second two shots it can be seen slinking away to the right after its initial surprise with the flash.
‘A rough size estimate can be gauged from a sample shot showing the camera’s owner near the tree where the animal is seen slinking away. The animal is estimated to be about two feet in length with a 12 – 18 inch tail. Not big enough to be a leopard but certainly puts it into the leopard cat/ Bengal / ocelot type range. The cameras are being reset with new attractants and marker poles in the hope of catching a clearer shot of the cat in question.’

Residents in Harbour Mille, a tiny community on Newfoundland’s south coast, want to know what they saw in the sky Monday night.
Darlene Stewart said she was outside taking pictures of the sunset when she saw something fly overhead.
She snapped a picture of the object in an attempt to zoom in on it to see what it was.
“Even with the camera, I couldn’t make it out until I put it on the computer,” she told CBC News. “I knew then it wasn’t an airplane. It was something different.”
Stewart’s picture shows a blurry image of what appears to be some kind of missile-like object emitting either flames or heavy smoke.
Emmy Pardy also saw the object.
“It appeared to come out of the ocean,” she told CBC News. “It was like it was in the middle of the bay.”
An RCMP officer was in the community Tuesday to investigate the reports.
Pardy said she’d like to know what the object was.
“It’s kind of scary because you don’t know if something is being set off out in the bay, [or] if someone is doing experiments,” she said.
The residents plan to be outdoors again Tuesday evening to see if there is a similar sight in the sky.
A German collector was arrested and jailed for smuggling 44 geckos through a New Zealand airport in his underwear.
WELLINGTON, New Zealand – A German reptile collector has been jailed for 14 weeks and must pay a 5,000 New Zealand dollar ($3,540) fine for plundering New Zealand’s wild gecko and skink populations, a judge ruled Tuesday.
Hans Kurt Kubus, 58, is to be deported to Germany as soon as he is released from prison, Judge Colin Doherty ordered.
Kubus was caught by wildlife officials at Christchurch International Airport on South Island in December, about to board an overseas flight with 44 geckos and skinks in a hand-sewn package concealed in his underwear.
A strange living creature which frightened locals and holiday makers washed ashore on the Gower Peninsula in Wales. It was a writhing mass of tentacles which measured six feet from end to end. An unnamed zoology expert said it was ‘like something out of Doctor Who’. People flocked to Oxwich beach to view the monster. But disappointed, they came away when scientists revealed that the fearsome tentacled creature was nothing more than ‘a seething mass of goose barnacles’ brought to the shore by the recent bad weather. It was once believed that geese actually hatched from the barnacles, and a Welsh monk in the 12th century claims he actually saw this happen! (Source: Daily Mail: 5th August 2009).
John Powell of Westbury, Wiltshire, claims ‘an unusual silver orb’ was following military craft as they came into land on the 22nd of July, and he caught the images on camera to back up his claims. He said: ‘I don’t believe in things from outer space but that thing was definitely tracking the plane. My neighbour was in the garden at the time and I wanted to shout to them, but I didn’t want to say “there’s a flying saucer in the sky” so I didn’t say anything in the end.’ Ministry of Defence bosses said they would not be investigating because they do not consider it a ‘potential threat’. At Barbury Castle, two crop circle investigators, Andrew Pyrka and Paul Jones, filmed a UFO and even touched it! The researchers were kicked out of a field by an angry farmer and then saw an orb. One filmed it while the other went over to the spot, but he could not see it. Andrew lifted his arm straight up and felt ‘a huge jolt of electrical current’. He said: ‘I don’t think I touched anything solid but I definitely interacted with some kind of strong field the UFO must have been giving off.’
Former prisoners are said to be still resident in the Hunt County Courthouse, Texas, but these inmates are now dead, apparently. The Paranormal Research and Investigations of Northeast Texas (P.R.I.N.T.) team conducted an investigation on the premises and report: ‘After numerous EVP session reviews, we have several that would be considered jail house conversations. They are all either negative, aggressive, or racial in nature. It’s exactly what you would expect from an old jail. These files have not been run through spectrum analyzation yet, to see if they register above or below the human voice, so we’re not yet categorizing them as electronic voice phenomenon, but we’re working on them. On numerous occasions, activity in the old cells, such as knocking and disembodied voices, would reply to our questions and actions. Kenny, our most seasoned and sceptic member heard his first disembodied voice in seven years of investigating! Upon review from his video equipment, he caught it there also. He was so excited that he began break dancing at one point.’ Meanwhile over in Alabama another paranormal group were trying to secure evidence of the ghosts that haunt the former Covington county jail: they also recorded EVP phenomena and felt odd sensations in the solitary confinement cells. MOD Police Officer Chris Swallow could not believe his eyes when he saw a giant cat on a rail track near Helensburgh, Argyll. He immediately took footage on his mobile phone while a friend took still photographs. The video was released in July, but Big Cats in Britain had the footage in their possession for two weeks before this. Initial analysis shows this to be a very large animal indeed, and definitely feline. Shaun Stevens of BCIB said: ‘After size investigations, the body is at least 3.5 feet in length, which does not include the long tail. This is one of the best pieces of footage to come out of Scotland.’ Meanwhile in Ayrshire the police launched a hunt for an animal, believed by them to be a big cat, that caused severe injuries to a horse near the Sundrum Holiday Park near Coylton. Photographs have also come from Aberdeenshire, Cornwall and Lincolnshire, prints from the Cannock Chase, Northampton, Aberdeenshire, and DNA samples from Wales are currently undergoing testing; in fact this has been a bumper month for reports coming into BCIB, far more than usual, ending with a vigil in a big cat hot spot at the end of the month in Leicestershire. Two UFOs were spotted in the skies over Paisley in Scotland in early July. The witness reported: ‘At first, I thought they were fireworks but they just kept on coming towards Brodie Park, in the direction of Neilston Road. I was thinking that they might be shooting stars but they were in the sky for a good three or four minutes. They definitely weren’t lights from an aircraft. We get quite a lot of helicopter traffic round here because the RAH is nearby, so I know what they look like. These lights were just different. It was weird.’ The lights then just vanished from view. Strathclyde Police said they had received no UFO reports. (Source: Paisley Daily Express: 21st July 2009).
Norwich-based photographer, Andrew Kitt felt ‘chills down his back’ when he processed photos from a shoot at Cinema City in Norwich. On one frame he noticed a shadow in the courtyard which is not seen in the next shot. He zoomed in and saw what seems to be a hunched shaped figure in Tudor-style dress. He said: ‘The hairs on the back of my neck went up when I first saw it. I’m keeping an open mind. I’m not saying it’s a ghost or anything, but it is certainly strange, it is not a hoax and the photograph has not been tampered with.’ Bar and restaurant manager Steven Smith said: ‘One of the projectionists was closing down one night and heard a whisper in one of the cinemas. It just said “Get out!” so he did, as fast as he could run. I’m here early in the morning but I’ve never come across anything eerie myself.” (Source: Norwich Evening News 24: 28th July 2009).
