Although this came out during the second half of last year, it deserves an airing here. Extraordinary Animals was first published in 1991, and set the tone for Shuker’s subsequent oeuvre, in that it was challenging, authoritative, witty and fascinating.
Revisited has been revived and greatly expanded with even more astonishing animals and animal behaviour. UnlikeMonster! (to which Shuker provides a Foreword), most of the creatures in this work are real, or were once real, or at least have some chance of being real, although you won’t find them in a zoo.
The uncertain photo of Ameranthropoides, the doubtful great ape of South America, graces the cover and has a chapter to itself. Other chapters include: ‘The New Guinea Singing Dog and other Canine Curiosities’, ‘Crowing Crested Controversies’, ‘Incongruous Insects’ and ‘Aardvark Anomalies’. You get the idea.
Immaculately researched, referenced and indexed, Shuker is not only fun to read – he can convince you of anything.
